DAMODAR VALLEY BRANCH OF API,Jharkhand Chapter

By DR B. K. MISHRA

Damodar vally branch, is the first branch of API established in the State of Jharkhand.

This report contains brief review of Damodar,Ramgarh Hazaribagh,Medaical Services of Hazaribagh district, and inauguration of Damodar Valley Branch.

Damodar (or Deonad) river originates in district Palamau, joins the river Hughly below Kolkata and for its considerable part of its course it flows through district Hazaribagh on its bank Ramgarh town is situated. Ramgarh was residence of the chiefs of Ramgarh for centuries and was the site of many battles for the capture of power. Impact of Ramgarh secsion of Indian National Congress is well known.

The name Hazaribag(written in past as Hazaribagh)comes from the mango grove at Hazari, one of the villages which makeup the town of Hazaribag. Hazari village was on the military road from Kolkata to Benaras which was made about 1782 and coincided at this stage with an earlier road between Kendi and Mukundganj. It was the usual halting place for travellers, so obtained a pre-eminence overe the neighbouring villages. In 1780 this locality was selected as the head-quarters of the Ramgarh Battalion. In 1834,a new district called Hazaribagh district, was created and this contained "Pragnas"of Ramgarh,Kharagdiha,Kendi and Kunda. The locality near village Hazari is its head quarter since then.

In the rennell's map (1779) Hazaribagh appears as "ocunihazari"near Mukundganj on the Barhi-Ramgarh Road.

There were not more tigers in Hazaribagh than any other parat of Chotanagpur.

Hazaribag is about two thousand feet above sea level at 23059' east longitude. It has been the site for excellent education centre (St.Columba's College etc.),political activity etc.but here only a brief history of medical services will be given. State's contribution to medical servaices at Hazaribag has nothing special. Military hospital was working at Hazaribag till 1857.

Christian Missionaries did a lot of medical saervices in this area. In 1871,Rev.(Dr.)Arachibald Templeton, M.D.,came to Pachamba (Presently in district Giridih)to serve these area under the 'Santal Mission of the United Free Church of Scottland.'This mission had hospitals at Pachamba, Tisri and Bamdah, and clinic at Pokhuria. Dr.(Rev.)Templeton was followed by eight European missionary doctors in succesion till 1930

Another mission'Dublin University Mission to Chotanagpur '(DUM),Surpassed the above mentioned mission in the field of medaical services. On 8th March/1892,along with other European Missionaries of D.U.M.came two members of medical team i.e.(1)One doctor,Rev.(Dr.)K.W.S.Kennedy,B.A.,MBBCh.

            (2)European nurse, Miss Francis Hassard

Soon after their arrival at Hazaribagh(i.e.08/03/1892) they started medical  work in old military hospital building,in market and in nearby villages. On 6th May,1892 they opened a new dispensary officially. This team of Dr.Kennedy and Miss Hassard, was son joined by Rev.(Dr.)J.G.F.Hearn,MBBCh,in 1893. Dr.Hearn died of typhoid fever at a very young age and in his memoray a residential area called'Hearngunj', was established, which still exists today near St.Columba's College.

D.U.M. had many European and Indian doctors and nurses in coming years, Dr.(Miss)Eva J.Jellet was the first foreign lady doctor to come to Hazaribagh in 1906. She was instrumental in the establishment, naming and functioning of the first female hospital at Hazaribagh. This hospital, initially called St.Columbas Zanana Hospital,(presently St.Columba's Hospital) was opened in November 1913. Since then it is doing very nice work.

Indian doctors to serve DUM in initial phase were Dr.Arit Kachchap, Dr.Komal Tirkey and Dr.P.D.Hemrom. Reva.(Dr.)Kennedy on the direction of DUM went to Ranchi to establish a clinic. At that time Ranchi had no effective medaical facility.

DUM also established clinic at Chitrapur (near Ramgarh),Ichak (near Hazaribagh) and many other villages in late 19th and early 20th century. The medical saervices were also provided by agencies/doctors other than missionaries.

Municipality was established at Hazaribagh on 1st April,1869. It established Hazaribagh municipality hospital, contributed funds to Sadar hospital Hazaribagh and other clinics. The District Board (established in 1900)established many clinics.

Dr.Rai Bahadur Bankim Chandra Ghosh, Dr.Rai Bahadur Suresh Mitra, Dr.Bimal Sarkar, Dr.Pannalal Banerjee, Dr.Bhola Nath Roy,MBBS, Dr.Arun Kumar Ghosh,Dr.(Mrs.)Dutta, Dr.Binay Chandra Chatterjee were some of eminent doctors to serve the Hazaribagh town in early and mid 20th  centuries. But Dr.Shambu Nath Roy (1901-1983)MB(Cal),DTM(Cal)was probably the first physician to come to Hazaribagh to establish a practice in 1935.The next physician to come to Hazaribagh was Dr.R.D.Gope (1912-1999) LMP,MBBS(Pat),DTD(Delhi),FRFP &S(Glasgow),FRCP(Edin).Dr.Gope established his practice at Hazaribagh during 1963-1999. He was trained in U.K. in cardiology by the Govt.of Bihar to run a Cardiology insltitute, but this could not happen.
